Materuni is a Chagga village about 40 minutes above Moshi, on the green lower slopes of Kilimanjaro. It is home to an 80-metre waterfall and to families who have grown coffee here for generations.
What you do
- The walk: about an hour each way on farm paths through bananas and coffee. Easy to moderate, sometimes muddy.
- The waterfall: a cool pool at the base – bring a swimsuit if you want to swim.
- The coffee ceremony: pick, roast and pound the beans by hand, then drink the result, usually to Chagga songs.
What to bring
Walking shoes with grip, a light rain jacket, swimsuit and towel, sun cream and some small Tanzanian shillings if you want to buy coffee to take home.
When to go
All year. The waterfall is strongest from March to May and in November, when paths are also muddier.
Combine it
Materuni pairs perfectly with an afternoon at Chemka hot springs, or with a day in Machame village. It is also an ideal acclimatisation hike before a Kilimanjaro climb.
